TÜBİTAK has decided to fund our project 125Y458, “Turkey's coastal litter, its sources, forever pollutants and microbial compositions and its spatial, temporal and statistical analysis: Standardization and harmonization in sampling and fractionation of plastic pollution,” led by Prof. Dr. Meral YURTSEVER, under the TÜBİTAK 1001 – The Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program through the Environment, Atmosphere, Earth and Marine Sciences Research Support Group (ÇAYDAG). The data science and statistical analysis work of the 30-month project, which will start on June 1, 2026, will be carried out in our Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

The project aims to address the multi-component pollution pressure on the coasts of Türkiye within a holistic framework. Along with beach litter, it will assess microplastics, mesoplastics, heavy metals, PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” and the microbial communities of the plastisphere together in time and space.

Our head of laboratory Assist. Prof. Dr. Ulaş YURTSEVER, Prof. Dr. Nurtaç ÖZ and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Berna KIRIL MERT of the Department of Environmental Engineering at Sakarya University, Prof. Dr. Sevcan AYDIN of Istanbul University, Prof. Dr. Sabahattin Sıddık CİNDORUK of Bursa Uludağ University, and Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özgür DOĞRU of Istanbul Technical University take part in the project as researchers.

Details of the project are available on our Projects page.
